While tap water is usually safe to drink in the state of California, many people opt for a home water filtration system anyway to further purify their drinking water, making it safer and more refreshing to drink. A reverse osmosis filter is an excellent option for anyone looking to have purified water in their home because they require little maintenance and remove all kinds of impurities! How Do Reverse Osmosis Filters Work?
Most reverse osmosis systems have a four to five stage remove impurities from your tap water by using a pump to push the tap water through a series of filters, including a carbon filter and a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane stops contaminants like fluoride, lead, chlorine, pesticides, sulfates, nitrates, and cryptosporidium, and leaves them behind in the chamber while the rest of the water flows through the filter and out through your fixtures. The leftover minerals are then flushed out of your home.
A reverse osmosis whole home water filtration system, which can sometimes be known as a "point of entry" system, ties into the main water line as it comes into your home. Point of entry systems allow you to have filtered water in all of your sinks, showers and tubs, and other appliances like your refrigerator, throughout your home. While these systems do have a higher up-front cost and require more maintenance than individual filters, they purify water throughout your entire house, while eliminating the need to install a different filter at each fixture.

What Kind of Maintenance Do These Systems Require?
Reverse osmosis systems require relatively little maintenance compared to other house water filtration systems. The membrane will need to be replaced about every 2 to 3 years, and the other filters within the system should be changed about every 6 to 12 months. Aside from that, it is also recommended that the system should be cleaned and inspected at least once a year, to ensure that it stays in good condition for longer.
