Flow Pro Plumbing is a family-owned business, and in June, our family suffered an unimaginable loss. We were busy planning for the arrival of our third child, Luca Lee Delgado—excited beyond words to complete our little family, when the unthinkable happened. At 39 weeks, during our final check-up, we discovered that our Luca had passed away due to an umbilical cord accident. When he was born on June 1st, we heard no first cries or coos, no wriggling in blankets or blinking eyes. Instead, we grieved, holding our stillborn baby for as long as we could.
Four months later, we still don’t know how to totally put our feelings into words. It was a hailstorm of anger, emptiness, and sadness. Even with an outpouring of support from our family and friends, we felt isolated in our grief, leaving the hospital with empty arms.
Unfortunately, stillbirth isn’t as uncommon as we would hope, with about 24,000 families affected every year. The death of infants is also far too common, but rarely talked about. Thankfully, October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month, with October 12 – 18 being National Stillborn & Infant Loss Week. This week brings awareness to this devastating experience to help families feel less alone.
Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep
While we are so incredibly fortunate to have such a strong and loving community around us, we would have loved to know there were organizations out there designed to help grieving families treasure the few moments parents have with their babies. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is a non-profit organization that offers free professional, remembrance portraiture to help the healing process. This organization has gifted more than 40,000 portrait sessions to families throughout the entire United States and in over different 40 countries.
With 1 in 4 women losing a baby during pregnancy, delivery, or infancy, it’s important to support organizations that support devastated families. That is why we are asking our community to join us in donating to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.
